Sonia Hernandez, a veteran educator with a deep heart for the Springdale community, is T.G. Smith Elementary School’s new assistant principal.
"I am excited to join the Smith family and to learn and work alongside Mrs. Barron," Hernandez said. "I want to thank Dr. Cleveland and the central office team for this opportunity to serve at Smith.”
Hernandez joins Smith Elementary after a successful tenure as assistant principal at George Elementary School, bringing with her a reputation for fostering positive school cultures and a relentless commitment to student success.
“I am ready to bring in years of experience in the classroom and as an administrator to help our students thrive," she said.
With 17 years of experience in the district, Hernandez’s career is a testament to her dedication to local students. Her journey began at the Pre-K center, where she served as an AmeriCorps member, instructional assistant and classroom teacher. She later transitioned to the former Lee Elementary School, serving as both a classroom teacher and assistant principal, before her most recent leadership role at George Elementary.
“Ms. Hernandez has done an outstanding job supporting students, staff and families, and her ability to build strong relationships and lead with care has made a lasting impact on the George community,” said Superintendent Dr. Jared Cleveland. “Her talent for connecting with people and guiding teams will serve her well as she begins her new role as assistant principal at Smith Elementary.”
Hernandez holds a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, a Master’s in Educational Leadership and an English as a Second Language Endorsement from the University of Arkansas. She’s currently pursuing an Educational Specialist Degree in Reading from Arkansas State University in Jonesboro.
Hernandez said education is about more than just curriculum.
"I am committed to developing strong, positive relationships with students, teachers, families and the entire Smith community," she said. "I am thrilled to contribute to our positive school culture."
Smith Elementary Principal Heather Barron said she’s excited to welcome Hernandez to the school as the assistant principal.
“Her leadership reflects a clear vision for high-quality teaching and learning, a deep understanding of what drives a positive school culture and a commitment to supporting both students and staff at high levels,” Barron said. “She will be an incredible asset to T.G. Smith Elementary.”
When she isn't at school, Hernandez and her husband of 14 years, Edgar, are the parents of two children, Elias and Emma. She said the family enjoys traveling, spending time with their large extended family and cheering on the Razorbacks in their free time. They are also avid fans of the NWA culinary scene, balancing a love for home cooking with trips to new local restaurants.
