Nora Shitandi- Couture and Tulle, finding her voice through art
Please read this message from her teacher: Har-Ber High School Art Teacher Betsy Allison
"Nora is in 11th grade at Har-Ber High School. She is my first-period TA with the understanding that she could create whatever she wanted whenever she wanted to. She had told me that she was interested in fashion and wanted to create her prom dress. Being an intuitive artist myself, I said "Go for it"! I had asked her to sketch her design so that I could see what she was envisioning so that I could help if she needed guidance at all. Nora began to bring her supplies which included her sewing machine, thread, and fabrics. We brainstormed about what the interior of the dress construction would look like and then she was off. She began constructing and altering the underprices of the gown. She would occasionally try on the garments for fitting measures. She began to spread materials out in the back of my art studio classroom. With students in the front section of the classroom working with ceramics, Nora created a fashion studio in the back section using an intern desk, a size adjustable mannequin that was purchased by my principal to help me foster a dream of housing fashion design students, a sewing machine, and tulle...lots of tulle. Between everything Nora is involved in she somehow kept her mind focused on making her prom gown. She would work during her TA period as well as after school. Her determination was inspiring and made me question why more students get involved in ideas coming to fruition. Like Nora, every student has ideas but that is where they normally stop. Giving space to students to seriously create is incredibly important for them to be curious and problem-solve within. Nora worked on her gown until moments before prom. She never doubted herself. She knew she was capable of doing this. This is the first complete garment Nora has ever made. "
